Your Guide to St. Louis Fall Family Photos

Here’s the thing about fall in St. Louis: it doesn’t always show up on schedule.

If you’re picturing golden trees and crisp air on September 15th, let’s slow that roll. Fall in the Midwest is a slow shift, and every month from late August through November brings a totally different vibe. The trick is knowing what to expect so you can choose the right fit for your family.

Whether you want golden grasses, moody skies, or peak fall color, this guide will help you figure out when to book, what to expect, and how to make the most of your St. Louis Fall family photos.

Fall Family Photo tips

→ Layer up! Fall weather can be unpredictable, so plan for anything.  For colors, go for earthy tones, soft neutrals, and rich colors that complement the autumn scenery. I love warm colors like mustard or rust paired with some neutrals like cream and camel, but you can also throw in dusty blue or teal as a nice contrast.

→ Wear appropriate shoes. High heels aren't suggested for an adventure session because the terrain is often uneven, full of rocks, or sandy. For the fall, low heeled boots work great or some nice chucks depending on the person and outfit. Just leave the athletic shoes at home. Brown shoes are the best because it won't show the dirt ;)

→ Remember that the goal of our session is to create a great memory for everyone, that way you will think happy thoughts every time you see your photos. This is not the time to discipline your children, threaten to take away screen time, or demand that they sit still and be good. Instead, let them be their silly, energetic selves and I'll guide you along in a way that feels fun and relaxed. And I have a secret for you: when your kids think they're being a little naughty, thats usually when the best smiles happen! ;)
